About Long Melford

The picturesque village of Long Melford lies in the heart of the beautiful valley of the Stour River. It is an enchanting place with a wide village green that is surrounded with a delightful mix-match of charming properties, some are of the pink washed variety topped with thick thatched roofs, while others are of rustic brick or stone. No matter, it is a stunning scene, worthy of a fine painting or a picture postcard.

Long Melford's main street runs along a former Roman highway, and in medieval times, wool and cloth were an important source of revenue to the village. Many remarkable buildings exist here. The church of The Holy Trinity is famous for it's flintwork and has a Lady Chapel that dates 1496 and shows excellent stained glass. Pepperpot towers are a feature of 16th-century Melford Hall, where Queen Elizabeth Ist dined in 1578. Beatrix Potter was a frequent visitor to the Hall and some of her paintings are displayed. There are a couple of historic inns in the area and the beautiful, Moated Manor, Kentwell Hall, set in acres of graceful parkland, is well worth seeing.

This gorgeous place is in an area that is graced with pretty villages and interesting towns that are brim full with magnificent churches, fine timbered buildings and classical English manors, all built by wealthy merchants during the prosperous 'wool' period and carefully preserved so that today they form an integral part of our historic heritage. Long Melford is an absolute joy and a must for all who appreciate fine historic buildings and glorious countryside.
